Misery is a 1987 psychological horror thriller novel by Stephen King. The novel was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1988, and was later made into a Hollywood film and an off-Broadway play of the same name. When King was writing Misery in 1985 he planned the book to be released under the pseudonym Richard Bachman but the identity of the pseudonym was discovered before the release of the book.

The novel focuses on Paul Sheldon, a writer famous for Victorian-era romance novels involving the character of Misery Chastain. One day he is rescued from a car crash by crazed fan Annie Wilkes, who transports him to her house and, once finding out what he has done to Misery in his latest book, forces him to write a new book modifying the story – no matter

Stephen King (Author) has said, "I wrote most of Misery by hand, sitting at Kipling's desk in Brown's Hotel in London. Then I found out he died at the desk. That spooked me so I quit the hotel". Since the early 1970's, Stephen King has captured the imagination of fans around the world with his chilling stories. Much of his worldwide fame is a result of the over thirty feature-length films that have been produced from his works. King's new book, From a Buick 8, reached bookstore shelves in September, along with his announcement that after wrapping up a couple of projects in 2002, he will stop publishing novels. He says he wants to bow out while still on top of his game.

He was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the younger of two sons. Although King was only three when his father went out for cigarettes and never came back, he says he experienced a very normal childhood. He enjoyed playing for his high school football team and was an enthusiastic guitarist in a small rock band.

In 1970, he earned a degree in English from the University of Maine. In 1971, he married Tabitha Spruce and is the father of three sons. The couple still resides in Maine in a house some have described as "a castle with spooky towers." King began teaching at Hamden Public High School in Maine, occasionally selling one of his short stories. Then, in 1973, Carrie was published, but only after King's wife fished it out of the garbage where he had thrown it during an exceptionally disheartened mood. Stephen King, who says his proper domain is terror and not horror, had written his first bestseller. And, as they say, the rest is history.

About the Playwright:

Simon moore (Playwright) A veteran of television, film and theatre, Simon Moore's motto is "Show it, don't say it." Moore co-wrote (with Jane Prowse) and produced Up on the Roof for London's West End; it later transferred to Connecticut's Long Wharf Theatre in the late 1980's. He wrote the Emmy award-winning script for Gulliver's Travels, Hallmark Entertainment's groundbreaking 1996 project. In 2000, he wrote the script for The 10th Kingdom, an expansive 10-hour television miniseries. Subsequently, he wrote Traffik¸ the acclaimed six-hour BBC miniseries about the international drug trade that served as inspiration for Steven Soderbergh's Academy Award winning feature, Traffic. Simon recently wrote the Emmy-nominated six-hour adaptation of James Gurney's cult Dinotopia books. In the near future he will hopefully be re-visiting Traffik territory.
